Most Italian wines are made not to over impose the taste of food, but to enjoy the combined pleasure of both. In fact, in most regions, food is usually eaten with wines of the same area, to enhance the produce also grown in the same area and terrain.
Italy has an incredible number of indigenous grape varieties planted and while we have never come across to a fully compiled list, it is said to be in the thousands.
